9. Moonlight

Genre: Drama

Release Year: 2016

An absolute titan of a film both in what it has to say and its importance, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight is a movie about growing up and not only finding yourself but finding someone else in the process. It’s a movie wrapped up in identity and the past, wanting to find your place in a world that may not be as welcoming, and finding someone where it can be a little quieter with.

The movie is shot so intimately and carefully, always taking care to be about main character Chiron’s experience as he learns from Juan (a fantastic Mahershala Ali) as a young boy, finds closeness with his friend Kevin (Jharrel Jerome) and rekindling that closeness with an adult Kevin (Andre Holland). Each segment of Chiron’s life, going from Little to Chrion to Black, all document his life in snapshots, and beautifully tell of a life and of trying to find himself.

But it’s the three central performances from Alex Hibbert as young Chiron, Ashton Sanders as teen Chiron and Trevante Rhodes as adult Chiron where so much power of the film comes from. Each brings a level of vulnerability and rawness to their performance, making you feel everything along with the character.

Moonlight is one of the best movies on Netflix, making it a sure-fire hit this fall.
