The Last Kids on Earth is the next must-watch Netflix animated series

The new Netflix original animated series The Last Kids on Earth is a breath of fresh air. If you love zombies and monsters and something lighthearted, then this is a must-watch for you.

The Last Kids on Earth is the latest Netflix original animated series, and you need to check it out on the streaming service.

The series is based on the best-selling illustrated book series written by Max Brallier. There are five books in the series.

Netflix is rolling out this series in quite a unique way. The first episode, which is now streaming on Netflix, is about an hour long, and it’s based on the first book in the series.

The first “book” follows the adventures of thirteen-year Jack Sullivan and his friends, Quint Baker, June Del Toro, and Dirk Savage after an apocalyptic event. Strange dark swirling portals appear in the sky one day, and suddenly there are monsters, zombies, and weird plant creatures everywhere.

There is no explanation of how it happened and no appearances of the military or police action. Jack is on a bus with Quint and Dirk, and they see people screaming and running down the street just before a monster tears the bus open.

The series opens 42 days after the apocalypse with Jack recording his daily life and adventures. Jack deals with the scary situation of being in a world turned upside by pretending it’s a video game. Counting badges and points with the death of each monster and zombie he killed. He also makes a list of each new monster he encounters and applies video game strength and weaknesses.

Jack is a wise-cracking, day-dreaming loveable character played by Nick Wolfhard, the brother of Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard. Nothing gets him down, and he takes everything in stride, but the driving force that motivates him is having his own family. That main drive is what pushes him into gathering up Quint, June and even Dirk. That deep yearning to have his own family is what sets this The Simpsons meets Shaun of the Dead series apart from other animated series.

According to What’s on Netflix, there’s already a season 2 in the works. Season 2 will be based on the novel Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade and will be making its entrance in 2020. Instead of one episode, the new season will be consist of 10 episodes.

I’m not much of an animated series watcher, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I cannot wait to see book 2 in 2020!
