The premise of Marvel’s What If? series is a bit of a mystery as no one knows what to expect from the Disney Plus series. However, we have a few ideas for fifteens episodes that need to happen at some point.
Out of all the new Disney Plus shows announced in recent months, Marvel’s What If? has to be the most highly-anticipated one. There are a few reasons why, though the most obvious is that the show will give fans an alternate look at some iconic storylines from Marvel Comics.
In that series of stories, the What If? comics explored concepts like Peter Parker becoming the Punisher and some odder ones like the X-Men’s Wolverine becoming a vampire. Similar alterations were made to other pivotal instances in the timeline, creating drastically different looks at classic tales.
As for the Disney Plus series, it’s not based solely on the comics — nor is it canon in the MCU —though most of the MCU cast are set to reprise their roles in this animated adaptation. One new addition, however, is Uatu The Watcher who’ll be voiced by Jeffrey Wright.
What the casting means for the show is that it will likely incorporate elements from the MCU narrative. These open-concept episodes could be entirely different from what we expect but fans are eager to see alternate takes on classic MCU moments, and Marvel has yet to disappoint.
Warning! Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame and MCU movies follow.
In lieu of those points, check out a list of episodes we want to see when the series launches on Disney Plus in 2021.
15. What If Captain Marvel snapped Thanos instead of Tony?
In the final act of Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) sacrificed himself to stop Thanos (Josh Brolin) from wiping out all life in the universe. Tony did so by using the Infinity Gauntlet but the weapon’s destructive power was too much for him to bear in the end. But, what if Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) would’ve used the gauntlet instead?
Towards the end of the grand battle, Captain Marvel has the gauntlet in hand. She grapples with Thanos over it and almost escapes. Unfortunately, Thanos extracts the Power Stone and uses it to blast Danvers out of the area. But what if she stopped him in time? What if Carol Danvers used the Infinity Gauntlet to erase Thanos’ army instead of Tony Stark?
Assuming the suggested scenario were to be imagined, the conclusion is simple: Tony Stark survives and Endgame doesn’t end on such a somber note. Stark’s death was probably one of the few points in the movie that was harshly scrutinized, but solely because it snuffed out the MCU’s greatest hero. Changing it could potentially make Avengers: Endgame a perfect movie, at least in terms of fan service.
We’re not too concerned about Carol Danvers seeing as how her ability set explored in Captain Marvel proved that she can absorb massive amounts of cosmic energy, meaning the Infinity Gauntlet wouldn’t have been fatal to her had she used it.
