The Witcher could be coming to Netflix in December 2019: Report
By Bryce Olin
Netflix Netherlands accidentally posted The Witcher release date on social media and quickly deleted the post.
Netflix accidentally shared the release date for The Witcher starring Henry Cavill, Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra if reports are to be believed.
According to a report from Polygon, Netflix Netherlands released a list of new shows coming to Netflix and how many days away they were from the release date. Redanian Intelligence first published the leaked release date. If the leaked release date is true, The Witcher would arrive on Netflix on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019.
Netflix has not commented on the news, and the list of shows was taken down shortly after it was posted.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard The Witcher is coming to Netflix this year. It was reported that the show would be arriving in December after a crew member shared that information on Instagram.
Accidental postings of release dates do happen often in the age of social media. Sometimes they are accurate, and sometimes they aren’t. It seems clear that the post was taken down because The Witcher release date hasn’t been announced yet. It’s also possible that they posted the incorrect release date. We simply don’t know at this time.
What’s interesting about the alleged release date for The Witcher is that Dec. 17 is actually a Tuesday. Typically, Netflix does not release its big original shows on Tuesdays.
Generally, we see new Netflix original shows and movies on Thursdays and Fridays. If Tuesday, Dec. 17, is the official release date, that would be a little surprising for those following the streaming service and how they release their new shows and movies.
While the day of the week might be a little surprising, the general release time (around Christmas) is not. Netflix always likes to give fans something to watch around the holidays. Earlier this year, we saw Stranger Things 3 over Fourth of July weekend. They’ve saved Bright, Bird Box, and other titles for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

It makes sense that Netflix would want to release The Witcher around Christmas time. More people have time off to binge-watch a new show. Kids are on winter break and aren’t in school, so they have time to watch. So, I can definitely see why Netflix is waiting until December to release the new season if this report is to be believed.
Along with that, there’s a lot of TV coming in the next two months. We thought The Witcher could be released this fall, but it also makes sense that Netflix would wait until football season and Fall TV kind of die down. The Crown season 3 is coming back in November, along with some other big shows and movies. Disney Plus launches on Nov. 12 with The Mandalorian and others.
In other words, there’s a lot of shows and movies to watch in the next few months, and Netflix will like to avoid all those shows and movies before releasing The Witcher in a relatively less competitive time for TV and movies.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in theaters on Dec. 20. Perhaps Netflix wants to get The Witcher out before The Rise of Skywalker takes over the box office this Christmas?
We know the new series is coming later this year. We just don’t know when yet. Stay tuned for more news about The Witcher and its release date on Netflix!
