The latest episode of Fear The Walking Dead introduced fans to the leader of a new group of marauders. Could she become the next Negan?

Back in July, AMC revealed the names of three new additions to the cast of Fear The Walking Dead season 5. The network didn’t provide character details but now we know much more about one of those newcomers.

Warning! Spoilers for the latest episodes of Fear The Walking Dead follow.

In “Leave What You Don’t”, the actual curtain is pulled back from viewers’ eyes when Virginia (Colby Minifie) enters the fold. Fans assumed Logan (Matt Frewer) was behind the bigger plan he was talking about but it turns out Virginia aka Jenny is in charge.

During the episode’s final moments, Logan’s crew is executed by Virginia and her gang of marauders in a sudden firing of shots. She has snipers positioned around the quarry, along with dozens of men carrying assault rifles beside her. They eliminate all of the unnecessary waste, leaving only Luciana (Danay Garcia) and her friends in the chaos.

Once Logan is out of the picture, Virginia approaches with an eerily similar offer—that is if you’ve watched season 7 of The Walking Dead. She gives Luciana’s group an ultimatum of either working for her or winding up like Logan’s men. Mind you, Virginia presents this proposal to them while all of Luciana’s friends are at these marauders’ mercy. Fortunately, Luciana makes the right decision and keeps her friends safe by agreeing to stay at the quarry.

What we should take away from this encounter is that Virginia—no pun intended—is positioning herself to become Fear The Walking Dead’s version of Negan. She just walked up to the scene as though she’s in command of the post-apocalyptic world, and Virginia has huge aspirations for all resources whether she has claims to it or not. Even her proposals seem to reflect the same malevolence that we heard in Negan’s speeches when he first arrived on the scene.

Additionally, while Virginia is reasonable with the use of deadly force, she also has no reservations about killing to drive a point across. We know this to be true after Virginia’s men executed Logan without a single conversation being had. She also held the fact that she could wipe out all of Luciana’s friends over their heads, exactly like Negan did, and the threat itself is much scarier than actually dying.

The psychological threat is why everyone got so tense during the standoff. Almost every member of their group was prepared to die, but Luciana didn’t want to become another Daryl (Norman Reedus). So to avoid seeing her friends killed, she does the only noble thing left to do.

The bad news is that someone as devious as Virginia will inevitably kill a fan-favorite character—that’s what new villains always do. There’s no guarantee that she’ll be as merciless as Negan but odds are she’ll have to prove a point when someone from Luciana’s group decides to rebel.
