Hawkeye may have found its Kate Bishop, as the Disney Plus series is courting Hailee Steinfield for its co-lead role opposite Jeremy Renner.

Is Hailee Steinfeld joining Hawkeye? That’s what Variety is reporting, citing unnamed sources that say she’s in talks to co-star in the upcoming Hawkeye series for Disney Plus.

The actress-singer would play Kate Bishop, Clint Barton’s (Jeremy Renner) mentee. It’s a massive role, because the plot of Hawkeye is that Clint passes on the titular mantle to Kate. That means she’s essentially going to be the main character at some point in the show’s run.

In turn, as Variety speculates, that could lead to Hailee Steinfeld having a part in the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe if the company sets up for a standalone Kate Bishop movie or adds her to future team projects.

Steinfeld already has Marvel experience; she voiced Spider-Woman (aka Gwen Stacy) in the smash hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse last year.

She also played the lead role of Charlie Watson in the Transformers franchise flick Bumblebee, and has appeared in three seasons of NBC’s singing competition The Voice.

Steinfeld has an Oscar nomination for her work in 2010’s True Grit and a Golden Globe nomination for 2016’s The Edge of Seventeen, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

Casting her in this role is a big move because Marvel is banking on Steinfeld being someone who can assume the Hawkeye mantle from Jeremy Renner and presumably be a large part of their future plans. After all the success they had with their original casting names like Renner, Robert Downey Jr. and Brie Larson, Marvel has a very high bar to reach with its second wave of heroes.

Add in the fact that the Hawkeye Disney Plus series is one of the service’s most anticipated due to how underserved his character was before Avengers: Endgame, and this is a role that needs to be exactly right.

Steinfeld isn’t the first name that pops when thinking about Kate Bishop, but then again, fans have been pleasantly surprised over the years with the actors that Marvel has cast. Many of them didn’t seem like superheroes either and often, they gave the performances of their careers. So while this is just buzz at this point—negotiations can always break down—there’s reason to be interested in whether or not she takes the role.

Hawkeye is set for a 2021 debut on Disney Plus. Are you intrigued by Hailee Steinfeld as a possible star or would you cast someone else as Kate? Let us know in the comments.
