The Dark Crystal: Taron Egerton on why he joined the Netflix series

Taron Egerton on why he joined the cast of the Netflix original series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is Netflix’s latest TV hit! Starring Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nathalie Emmanuel and more, the original series tells the story of the World of Thra before the events of Jim Henson’s 1982 film, The Dark Crystal. 

At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Netflix Life was lucky enough to attend a press conference with Egerton, executive producer Lisa Henson, and director Louie Leterrier. During the press conference, Egerton was asked why he wanted to be a part of the new Netflix series.

Egerton was a fan of Jim Henson’s original film, and that was one of the main reasons why Egerton signed on to the project.

“I watched the film, originally, I think, probably when I was around six or seven. My dad showed it to me,” Egerton said. “And I just thought completely enchanting. I find it quite scary, but in that kind of very exciting way.”

“And so, around 18 months ago, when I got a call about this, I really, really thought it was so exciting to be involved with something that I was so enamored of as a kid,” Egerton continued. “Especially given how faithful the means of telling stories and techniques used to tell the story, it’s very, very, very faithful, evocative of the original movie.”

In Age of Resistance, which is set before the events of the original film, Egerton plays Rian, a gelfling of the Stonewall Clan, who discovers a dark secret and goes on a mission to stop the evil Skeksis. Essentially, Egerton plays one of the main characters in the series.

With Age of Resistance being different from every show on TV right now, Egerton also explained some of the challenges in taking on a project like this. To help see how it would all come together, Egerton visited the sets to see how the series would look, come together and exist in the world of the show.

“As an actor, it’s always fascinating and exciting when you get to be able to do something that’s different or that you haven’t been involved before, whether that be from a character perspective or something like this, you know,” Egerton said. “There’s nothing else out there like this. So, it was really interesting for me to go and see what they were doing. I find the craft fascinating both from a kind of production perspective and the making of these puppets to, you know, the way it’s shot and put together.”

For those who are unaware, Age of Resistance uses incredibly detailed puppets and CGI to create the world of Thra. It’s one of the most incredible achievements in the art of puppetry in TV and film the world has ever seen. It’s a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing series.
