There’s good news for kids and the parents of kids: The new Netflix movies coming in September will add four new animated movies to the rotation. That’s right, the littlest binge-watchers have four new options to watch over and over on top of the handful of titles they probably have blaring through every screen they can get their hands on. Igor, the first animated film arriving this month celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, but it’s headed for our watch lists in September.
Not an adaptation or sequel, Igor follows the title character (voiced by John Cusack), who’s a lab assistant and dreams of the day when he can be a mad scientist just like his master, Dr. Glickenstein (John Cleese). Fortunately, Igor finds the opportunity to get his foot in the door and win the kingdom’s annual science with the help of Scamper (Steve Buscemi) and Brain (Sean Hayes). He plans on building an evil monster, but the result is the sweet Eve (Molly Shannon).
Igor comes from director Tony Leondis, who also helmed such animated films as the Lilo & Stitch direct-to-video sequel and The Emoji Movie. Upon release, the film garnered middling to negative reviews from critics, reflected by its 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Igor didn’t fare much better at the box office, bringing in a total worldwide gross of $30.7 million against a budget of $25 million. Perhaps the film will manage to finally find its audience 11 years later when it begins streaming on Netflix at the top of September.
