Perhaps more so than other months, September on Netflix brings a fair amount of independent films that haven’t made a mark on the mainstream. In fact, most Netflix binge-watchers probably haven’t even heard of most of the movies arriving this month. Rather than rewatching that old favorite blockbuster for the millionth time, our watch lists will be flooded with smaller movies, like We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which is one of September’s best new Netflix movies.

Based on Shirley Jackson’s 1962 novel of the same name, We Have Always Lived in the Castle stars Taissa Farmiga as Merricat Blackwood and Alexandra Daddario as Constance Blackwood, sisters who live in isolation with their Uncle Julian (Crispin Glover). They have confined themselves after a tragedy that occurred six years earlier, but their world gets turned upside down with the arrival of their cousin Charles (Sebastian Stan), who’s after the family fortune and threatens to expose a dark secret.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle comes from director Stacie Passon, who has also directed episodes of Transparent, Billions, The Punisher, The Society and Tales of the City. The film first premiered at the LA Film Festival in September 2018 and received a formal release this May. Following its release, the film earned an 86% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Don’t miss We Have Always Lived in the Castle when it makes its Netflix debut on Sept. 14.
