11. Small Crimes

When a corrupt ex-cop gets released from jail for crimes he committed using his power as a police officer, the past has a way of drawing you back in. Small Crimes is a crime drama that garnered somewhat favorable reviews for its various performances and straightforward story. However, some of these aspects were found to be disinteresting.

The movie was adapted from a book of the same name written in 2008 by Dave Zeltserman. In the lead role of Joe Denton, former Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau shows more of his range. His performance is easily the best part of this movie as we follow Denton through his troubled life. He returns to his parent’s house and attempts to reconnect with his children who are turned away. Then, his crimes catch up to him with an attempted beat down and a threatening situation with the police. He is left deciding to either clean up more of his doing and burn his new life or try to make things right.

The wonderful part about Netflix having such a huge presence in that these smaller movies have a place to live. This movie may have had a marginally small theatrical release and would have been hidden from everyone to see unless it had some sort of widespread release via digital or disc. It’s a perfect Netflix movie that meets lowered expectations and doesn’t have the strain of meeting box office numbers.
