12. Mute

Another science fiction entry proving how popular the genre is when there are no box office headaches. Films like Blade Runner are considered elite entries into the science fiction genre but did not achieve any box office success.

Unfortunately, this film does not reach a level like those others. Only rare films like Star Wars and even some of the recent superhero movies have achieved this level. Netflix offers the relief of this headache and simply get the movie out to as many people as possible.

Mute has an awesome cast in the likes of Paul Rudd, Alexander Skarsgård, and Justin Theroux, as well as an interesting atmosphere. The background looks like a slice out of Blade Runner 2049 with its neon lighting and dark futuristic setting. Truly, it looks as if the movie could be taking place a few streets over.

Skarsgård plays a mute bartender who feels protective over a lover and sometimes coworker. Her apparent disappearance leads him to venture into the crime-filled underbelly of their city. His journey tracks her past and present throughout her many contacts. Along the way, a child adds to the conflict and the overfilled story tries a bit too hard to “say” something about love or family
