It is a sad day for lady detective fans everywhere. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries will be leaving Netflix this September. Here are all the details.
This is not a drill! Tragedy has struck the murder mystery section of Netflix and it may not ever be the same. It has been announced that Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries will be leaving Netflix US and UK on Sept. 15, 2019. *sobs*
One of the best shows Netflix ever received the rights to stream will be leaving us and probably heading over to AcornTV or Britbox since the first two seasons are already there. But if you want to watch them every day and not have to pay a subscription fee, you can pick up the Blu-ray/DVD of all three seasons on Amazon.
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries follows the amazing, cunning, and scandalous (at least according to Aunt Prudence) Phryne Fisher, the lady detective. As soon as she makes her way back to the shores of Australia after being gone for years, it becomes clear she is not a woman to be pushed aside.
From the first murder she encounters, Phryne is on the scene telling the police what they’ve missed and asking questions they hadn’t thought of. She is not afraid to get her hands dirty tracking down suspects, breaking into buildings, and shooting at people coming after her with her golden pistol. And she does all this dressed in fantastically beautiful clothes!
But the police aren’t all bad. There is a certain Inspector Jack Robinson who catches Phryne’s eye and they begin one of the best slow-burn romances television has ever seen. They have at least one almost kiss every other episode. *fans self*
Though Miss Fisher is about murder and romance, it’s also about friendship and a woman being able to be whatever she wants. Phryne’s confidant, Dot, is a very religious woman who is willing (for Phryne) to test the limits of the rules to help those in need. She is almost the exact opposite of Phryne, but because Miss Fisher accepts women in all forms, they get along perfectly.
The show also features Miss Fisher’s best friend, Dr. Elizabeth McMillan (aka Mac), a gay woman doctor who rocks suits and fedoras like no one else could. She helps Phryne with autopsies and certain investigations. Not many shows set in the 1920s show this much female empowerment. It’s what makes the show so unique.
Overall, the series is kitschy, witty, fun, romantic, and bold. What more could you want in a detective show? But it’s also what makes the news that it’s leaving Netflix even more heartbreaking. The only consolation is that the Miss Fisher movie will be coming out soon via AcornTV and we get to see what Phryne and the gang get up to after season 3.
