Disney Plus will not have Deadpool and other R-rated movies
By Bryce Olin
Disney Plus, Disney’s new streaming service, will not carry R-rated movies acquired in the Disney-Fox deal, including Deadpool, Logan and more.
Hoping to watch Deadpool on Disney Plus? You’ll have to look elsewhere for that movie and other R-Rated content.
According to a report from ComicBook.com, Disney Plus will not carry R-rated content. The report cites reporter Eric Vespe who spoke with a Disney Plus spokesperson from D23 over the weekend.
That means Deadpool and Fox’s R-rated movies that Disney acquired in the deal for 21st Century Fox will not be available to stream on Disney Plus. The streaming service launches on Nov. 12 and will carry most of the Disney vault, including Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars movies, in addition to some content acquired in the Fox deal.
Vespe broke the news on Twitter.
If Disney Plus will not have any R-rated or mature content, you have to wonder where those movies and shows that Disney now owns, specifically FOX’s content, will be available for streaming. The easy answer is clearly Hulu.
Hulu could become Disney’s stash of more-adult-than-PG-13 content, like Deadpool, Logan and more. With Disney owning Hulu, there’s also a chance that the streaming network could be the place where Disney, theoretically, could make R-rated original movies and TV-MA TV shows if they want. Who knows if they will, but it will be possible to separate the family-friendly content from there movies for older audiences.

This is an interesting decision for Disney. Clearly, R-rated content goes against the company’s messaging for, like, ever, especially when the company is built around Mickey Mouse. In recent years, they have moved beyond that kind of content, in my opinion, with Marvel and Star Wars, specifically.
There’s so much potential for R-rated content in these worlds. Conventional thinking was that R-rated movies don’t gross, but that idea is definitely changing, or it should be. Deadpool was a huge success, as was Logan. There’s room for Disney to expand in this area, and I really hope they do. There’s definitely a market for movies like Deadpool, Logan and other R-rated movies.
There was fear for a while that Deadpool would be rebooted for the MCU, but according to Screen Rant, Deadpool was included in the D23 sizzle reel, which proves the character is here to stay. Hopefully, that means Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds will join the MCU. Even more hopefully, Marvel will continue making R-rated Deadpool movies, too. Again, there’s clearly a market for that content, even if it’s not available to stream on Disney Plus.
We’ll let you know more about these developments in the future. Disney Plus launches on Nov. 12!
