Stranger Things star Maya Hawke released an A-side/B-side single earlier this month. Can everyone on the Netflix show sing, too?
I’m sure most Stranger Things fans who binge-watched the newest season of the show instantly fell in love with Robin (Maya Hawke) and Steve’s (Joe Keery’s) relationship throughout the season, especially the “Muppet-esque” duet we got to witness in one of the Starcourt Mall’s bathrooms. It’s clear that Robin quickly and easily became a wonderful addition to the Stranger Things family.
On Aug. 16, Hawke released an A-side/B-side style single, thus making her musical debut! The single is titled “To Love a Boy/Stay Open” and features lyrics written by Hawke herself.
According to an article from HighSnobiety, producer Jesse Harris, “who has worked with the likes of Lana Del Rey and Norah Jones” worked with Hawke on the music and recording of the single.
Hawke shared her experience writing the lyrics for the two songs in an interview with Vogue:
"“To Love a Boy” was the first song that Jesse and I wrote together. I was in a headspace of really having the desire to fall in love. And it was very dreamy and very imaginative and hopeful. It was based on an idea of wanting to feel love as all-consuming as you would feel being consumed by the ocean. And then, the second song, “Stay Open,” was a year and a half later. I had fallen in love."
As someone who has listened to the single many times to date, I can definitely feel where she is coming from and how these feelings translated to the music. They feature very simple instrumentation that allows Maya Hawke to really shine with her gentle voice.
Along with the music available to stream, a music video for “To Love a Boy” was published, featuring Hawke as a “mermaid” character following the same sort of idea that she shared with Vogue. Check it out here:
It’s been quite a year for this Stranger Things star and I hope we can expect some more music soon! In Hawke’s interview with Vogue, she shared that: “acting is my first love and my focus” and that while she loves creating music, we won’t be expecting any sort of mainstream music career.
Ultimately, I’m eager to see what comes next! With Stranger Things favorites Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Joe Keery (Steve) and many others in the music/broadway scene, it’s exciting to see the Stranger Things cast be multi-talented in so many ways.
