After what feels like two full years of silence, Netflix finally gives us a date and a first look at the Michael B. Jordan produced series, Raising Dion.

It feels like it has been forever since we heard that Michael B. Jordan would be producing the superhero drama Raising Dion. The series to be based on a comic book by the same name that generated buzz through a short film that was released back in 2015. Jordan obtained the rights back in 2017 and brought the series to Netflix, but we finally have our first images and a concrete release date.

The story, created by Dennis Liu and Jason Piperberg, follows the widowed Nicole Reese as she’s left to raise her son Dion after the mysterious death of her scientist husband. At some point, Dion starts to manifest certain supernatural abilities and the difficulties that come with raising a child alone are only amplified. The story, rather than focus on the gifted person primarily, will focus more on the caregivers in his life, namely his mother. Alisha Wainwright (Shadowhunters) was cast to play Nicole and Ja’Siah Young was cast as Dion.

Michael B. Jordan will not only executive produce, but will also have a recurring role as Mark, Nicole’s late husband and Dion’s father. Joining this core group will be Jason Ritter as Pat, Mark’s close friend who helps Nicole with Dion in Mark’s absence.

Since the announcement back in 2017 things have been quiet around the show’s development. Many wondered if the show had been scrapped. However, with the release of the first look images from EW this week we can rest assured that Raising Dion will be coming soon. Oct 4. to be exact.

The series will join the growing list of original superhero dramas hitting streaming services in the past year. Netflix has had its success with The Umbrella Academy and more recently Amazon’s The Boys has dominated the conversation.

With Netflix proactively ending its relationship with Marvel, there has been a large void to fill and they’ve wasted no time in doing so. Raising Dion should prove to be a very unique take on the genre and it will be interesting to see just how much super hero action we get. As I understand it, Dion will just be starting to realize he has abilities and at his young age his mother is more worried about protecting him than unleashing him to do heroic things.

Raising Dion arrives Oct. 4 so brace yourselves for a new face in the super hero genre.
