You season 2 will be darker and gorier than the first season
You creator Sarah Gamble revealed You season 2 will be even darker and gorier than the first season of the Netflix original series starring Joe Goldberg.
Spoiler warning: Major spoilers for You season 1 ahead!
You, a show that was based on a novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, has caught a lot of buzz since its Netflix release in December 2018. To recap, You follows the story of Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley, who becomes obsessed with Guinevere Beck after meeting her at the bookstore where he works. Throughout the show, Beck is unaware of Joe’s stalking her through the use of her social media.
After careful planning, Joe inserts himself into Beck’s life and the pair start a relationship. However, Joe finds it difficult to adjust to the reality of dating Beck as he had an idealized version of her in his mind. In the season finale, everything comes to a head when Beck finds out about Joe’s precious stalking and she ends up being his final victim of the season.
While the audience is still processing her death, the show adds another shocking twist when it reveals to us that Joe’s ex-girlfriend Candace is still alive. That is where the season ends and reports are coming in that day You season 2 will be even darker than the first.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Sera Gamble is quoted as saying “darker than season one” and she mentioned how our main character Joe moves to Los Angeles. The new darker turn might be a good development in the show as there are concerns of the popularity of Joe Goldberg on social media.
In a culture where true crime interest is on the rise, many find themselves gravitating towards the charismatic criminals in our media. Whether it be Joe Goldberg or Ted Bundy who was played by Zac Efron and even Pennywise played by Bill Skarsgård, these characters have been the objects of adoring fangirls.
Much to Penn Badgley’s confusion, they are very vocal about their love for his psychotic character, Joe Goldberg.
Gamble also said the second season will be a little bit gorier than the first season. Here’s what she told Us Weekly about one scene in the new season, via US Weekly:
"“You will know it when you see it. Episode 2 of the season has my single favorite shot that I have been a part of in my entire career. My career is full of blood and gore and monsters. It’s also beautifully shot and the director who shot the second episode lavished a lot of love. Joe is forced to do something he really doesn’t want to do.”"
The show deciding to take an even darker turn with Joe’s storyline might show that he is not a character to be adored.
His new environment in California won’t change who he is because he will always have this unhealthy compulsion towards women he truly believes he loves. What awaits for him next season is something we all can’t wait to watch unfold, but what we can definitely rely on is what he buried will be uncovered.
We don’t know when exactly You season 2 will be released on Netflix. There have been rumors that the new season is coming to Netflix later this year.
