A list of the five best killer animal movies on Netflix, including 47 Meters Down starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt.

Whether you are heading out to the movies this weekend to catch 47 Meters Down: Uncaged or you are just planning a lovely chill weekend on the couch, there’s no better way than watching humans getting killed by animals on Netflix.

Luckily, Netflix has a good variety of killer animal movies for you to watch. If you’re a fan of the genre, you have to check out these movies. Below, I have ranked the top 5 killer animal movies on Netflix.

5. Hold the Dark (2018)

While Jeremy Saulnier’s (The Green Room) film is not the traditional animal attack story that the set up would lead you to believe, stick with this one as the slow burn definitely pays off. It will take everything you thought you knew about Hold the Dark, and it will completely flip those exceptions on their head before the final credits roll.

4. The Monster (2016)

Bryan Bertino’s The Monster might not be an animal you would find in the zoo, but the film was too good to leave off this list.

If you are a fan of A24 movies (The Green Room, The Witch, and Hereditary), you know to expect flawed characters, with tension slowly building, along with a terrifying and exciting finale. When seen, the Monster effects look fantastic, and the kills have enough gore to satisfy horror fans. Check it out.

3. Eight Legged Freaks (2002)

If you like comedy mixed into your giant monster movies, Eight Legged Freaks is the movie for you. I still remember seeing Eight Legged Freaks in the theater back in 2002, and despite being a modest hit, my wife and I were the only people in the theater on opening weekend.

In a weird way, that added to the overall experience to this campy classic. If you are in the mood, you absolutely cannot go wrong with David Arquette (Scream), Kari Wuhrer (Anaconda), a teenage Scarlet Johansson, and hilarious giant mutated spiders.

2. 47 Meters Down (2017)

I’ll be honest, 47 Meters Down is a movie that I completely slept on while it was in theaters. Even my shark-loving daughter could not convince me to give it a watch. It wasn’t until seeing the trailer for the sequel 47 Meters Down: Uncaged that I decided that I should finally give the original a go.

After finally watching 47 Meters Down, I was disappointed in myself for not seeing this one on the big screen. Johannes Roberts (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has taken a simple girls go scuba diving, girls get trapped, and shark attack madness ensues story and turned 47 Meters Down into a tense, edge-of-your-seat style thriller. Even if the ending pulls the rug out from underneath a lot of the earlier scares, it’s still an effectively fun shark movie.

1. Backcountry (2014)

Adam MacDonald’s (Pyewacket) Backcountry, is a gorgeously shot and intense survival horror thriller. It has the best bear attack sequences I had ever seen at the time. The Revenant now holds that honor.

If you are a fan of The Edge (1997) or the classic Jaws-inspired Grizzly (1976), give Backcountry a watch. Seriously, it’s worth watching for the cinematography alone.

If you are in the mood for animal attack horror this weekend, all the movies listed above are currently streaming on Netflix.
