Fear The Walking Dead’s Season 5 midseason premiere gave us a lot to ponder over, specifically what’s happened to Alicia since the last time we saw her. The question is: What has changed?

Before anyone panics about Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) leaving Fear The Walking Dead, she’s safe for the time being. What’s of interest is the young Ms. Clarke’s new outlook on life.

In today’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead, Althea (Maggie Grace) and the other survivors participate in her coverage of the day. Each of them records a testimonial on camera which gives us an idea of how they’ve changed since the Mid-Season Finale.

The good news is they’re all doing rather well after escaping certain death at the nuclear reactor in El Paso. Everyone is optimistic about the mission — even Dwight (Austin Amelio) who recently lost Sherry’s trail — is happy. Alicia is just as content but there’s something bubbling beneath the surface.

What we learn during Alicia’s testimonial is that she hasn’t killed since the treehouse incident. That would seem like a good thing for other survivors in the apocalypse but it’s not just people, Alicia won’t kill walkers either.

Apparently, the treehouse slaughter from “Is Anybody Out There” frightened Alicia beyond her breaking point. She’s been this unyielding force in the apocalypse for so long, though it’s clear she’s shaken up. Alicia always seemed to stare death in the face without a drop of fear but now she won’t even engage with the undead.

It’s worth noting that Alicia’s brother Nick (Frank Dillane) went through a similar phase during their time at Otto’s Ranch. He refused to leave the grounds due to fear of the undead and Alicia appears to be going through a similar phase.

Fortunately, Nick got past that hardship so we can safely assume Alicia will overcome these same hurdles. She also has Morgan’s support to count on which gives us hope that Alicia will evolve further, becoming stronger in the process. The question is: How will she get past this obstacle?
