After watching Dustin and Suzie sing The NeverEnding Story theme song, it’s time for Netflix to remake The NeverEnding Story. Spoilers ahead for Stranger Things 3.

If you’re a fan of The NeverEnding Story, you probably loved THAT scene in Stranger Things 3.

While Joyce, Hopper and Murray are trying to unlock the keys to disable the Russian machine keeping the Upside Down gate open, Dustin enlists the help of his girlfriend, Suzie, to find out Planck’s Constant, the code to the keys.

Suzie, who hasn’t heard from Dustin since summer camp, is reasonably upset. In exchange for Planck’s Constant, Dustin must sing the theme to The NeverEnding Story, and Suzie joins in. It’s one of my favorite scenes from this series, and it was the perfect moment of relief in a heavy, heavy, heavy episode of the Netflix original series. Check it out below!

After watching Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Suzie (Gabriella Pizzolo) break up one of the most intense scenes in the history of the series with an amazing rendition of the theme to The NeverEnding Story, it’s clear it’s time to remake the fantasy classic.

After that scene, one of the top searches and social media discussions was about The NeverEnding Story. Some kids, and probably adults, too, watching Stranger Things 3 had no idea what that scene is about, which signals The NeverEnding Story could use a little boost in the current pop culture landscape.

For those who don’t know, the film, which was released in 1984, is based on the book of the same name by Michael Ende.

Stranger Things has reinvigorated that love for 80s pop culture, and I think it would be smart for the streaming network to find a way to lean in a little more into that nostalgia. It clearly works for Netflix and fans of this series.

Before you start yelling at me, please understand that I already hear you. We need to make new stories, and I totally agree. In this era of streaming and increased content production, there’s room for new shows and movies, as well as a few remakes mixed in there. It might have skewed too far on the remake and reboot side for now, but it will balance out eventually.

Remakes and reboots are all the rage right now, for better or worse. Established fanbases give studios an option to place a much safer bet on movies and shows. The studios know there is an audience that will watch what they make, and that really accomplishes the goal of what these studios and networks are trying to do.

There’s a reason Netflix is working on a prequel for The Dark Crystal that comes out on Aug. 30, 2019. There’s clearly a market for this content, and I think it’s cool Netflix is even considering greenlighting projects like this.

Even if Netflix took The NeverEnding Story story in a different direction, I would be on board. I just want to see more from this world I loved as a kid, and I don’t think I’m alone here!

The obvious way Netflix could do it is by casting some of their young stars, like those from Stranger Things, in major roles in the film. Matarazzo from Stranger Things would make the perfect Bastian, even though he’s a few years too old now. They could just make the character a teenager instead of a pre-teen at the beginning of the story. Problem solved.

I know I’ll probably take some heat for this idea, but the opportunity is there for Netflix to do something really cool, especially with all the technical advancements since the first movie came out. This could be one trippy, trippy movie with a small special effects and CGI budget.

The NeverEnding Story remake or continuation only works at Netflix right now. Nobody is greenlighting that project for a theatrical release. There simply are not enough fans willing to pay theater prices to see that movie. You put that movie on Netflix, though, and that’s a home run for fans of the classic fantasy tale.

With The Office, Friends and other shows leaving Netflix soon, Netflix needs to continue building by investing in established fandoms. With virtually unlimited resources, Netflix is one of the few studios who could put together a remake of The NeverEnding Story without a ton of risk, and that’s what makes them the perfect partner.

Who knows if Warner Bros., who owns the distribution rights to the film, would be interested in teaming with Netflix to make this happen? Netflix has those deep pockets, and that’s what should matter when it comes to this.
