Disney Plus is planning reboots for Home Alone, Night at the Museum and more

HOME ALONE - Eight year old Kevin MacAllister (Macaulay Culkin) gets lost in the shuffle as his large, upper-middle class suburban family rushes to make a plane that will ferry them off to their Christmas vacation in France; Kevin, having been banished to an attic room as punishment, is subsequently forgotten. At first this is a dream come true, as for the first time in his young life he has no one to answer to but himself, and he takes full advantage of his newfound freedom, eating junk food and watching late-night horror flicks. But when the bumbling Wet Bandits Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) target his house for a robbery, Kevin must step up to defend his home; he sets a maze of booby traps so elaborate that only an eight year old imagination could concoct them. Disney is rebooting Home Alone, Night at the Museum, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Cheaper by the Dozen, and other Fox franchises for Disney Plus.

Get ready for more reboots and remakes heading to Disney Plus! According a report from Deadline, Disney is developing reboots for four FOX movies, including Home Alone, Night at the Museum, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news during the most recent call with investors. Disney, after acquiring Fox and their movies, can now develop projects based on those shows and movies. I have a feeling there will be many more reboots and remakes from Fox titles in the works other than these four titles.

During the call, Iger also announced a new streaming bundle for Disney Plus that also includes Hulu and ESPN Plus for only $12.99 per month. That’s a pretty sweet deal right now, considering the amount content available.

We don’t know if these projects will be movies or TV shows or any other details about these projects. It will be interesting to see if Disney goes straight remake or if they make them TV shows, anthologies or something like that. There’s a lot of different options to how they can make these projects happen.

While I have no doubt people will watch these new movies or shows on Disney Plus, I have to wonder who is asking for these remakes.

I love the classic stories as much as anyone. I’ve enjoyed a few of the Disney re-imaginations lately, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and The Jungle Book. But, there has to be limits to this, and to me, re-imaginations of Home Alone, Night at the Museum, and others just crosses the line a little bit.

To a certain extent, viewers may enjoy these projects. I don’t see how a Home Alone reimagination could hold a candle to the original. That was such a lightning-in-a-bottle-type of cinematic experience, and there’s a reason why people watch the movie every holiday season. For me, it doesn’t work without Macaulay Culkin and John Hughes.

With all that said, there’s clearly a market for this content. These projects are household names and established brands, even if they haven’t been around for a while. Viewers will watch just because they’ve heard of the other works, and that’s what Disney is doing with this. Disney Plus seems to be very family friendly, and this is the type of content they need to make the streaming service a must-have for families. Star Wars and Marvel bring that, too, but that’s going to be for older kids and adults, mostly.

There will be tons of kids who have access to Disney Plus subscriptions, and these reimaginations will target those subscribers to experience those franchises for the first time.
