The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 final three episodes: Will June get the kids out?
By Paul Zuniga
On the latest episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, June found she had more allies than expected. Now, her plan to free as many children as possible from Gilead seems plausible. Will she make it work?
The junior season of The Handmaid’s Tale has been building towards June (Elisabeth Moss) starting a revolution in Gilead with many fans looking forward to it. She’s endured so much at her oppressor’s hands and the disparaged handmaid has had enough. June isn’t going to incite insurrection just yet but she’s definitely making important moves.
Warning! Spoilers for the latest episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale follow. Read on at your own discretion.
June’s latest play is to get as many children as possible out of the country. She’s been concerned with her own daughters’ safety but June now understands she needs to free more than just her own, because, in the end, it can’t be just about her. June has to place the same value on everyone else’s children if she wants them to follow her. Then again, it appears as though June already has their support.
The conclusion of “Bear Witness” ended with June receiving confirmations from other handmaids and Marthas who wish to help her with freeing children. June actually receives so many acceptance muffins that she has to think about a bigger convoy for the refugees. She initially intended to take one truck acquired by Commander Lawrence but she’s going to need multiple vehicles now. The question is: How will June and Commander Lawrence get the border guards to open the gate for them?
Aside from the how, the chances of June succeeding with her mission are very slim. She’ll have to cross the border with a truckload of kids and the patrols aren’t just going to let her pass through. Even a pass for Commander Lawrence won’t grant them safe passage through the gates, and all borders are protected.
It is worth noting that Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) isn’t the only ally whom June can count on. The Commander’s wife also appears to be on board with the plan so she may assist in the crossing. Eleanor may even sacrifice herself to distract the guards. Her compromised mental state could easily be used to confuse bystanders while June sees her truck through. Of course, guarantees of safe passage will be determined by a number of factors.
For one, June has to earn the Marthas’ cooperation. She’ll be questioned by their leaders in next week’s episode and some of them aren’t completely sold on her plan, one of them even calls June’s plan a dumb one. This may just be constructive criticism, though we should expect some of the Marthas to resist.
Second and most important of all, Eleanor’s unstable condition appears to be reaching a breaking point as well. The promo for next week’s episode shows Eleanor pointing a loaded gun at her husband while June watches from afar. Commander Lawrence is visibly concerned for his life, trembling on the floor. All the while, June has to watch as her ticket out of the country gets his ticket punched. Of course, that’s still to be determined.
All in all, there’ll be several bumps in the road ahead. June is in the position to do some good by freeing the captured children of Gilead but she’ll need to navigate these roads carefully if she wishes to complete her mission.
