Riverdale: Cole Sprouse talks Jughead’s new school, setting for THAT scene
By Bryce Olin
Jughead is going to a new school in Riverdale season 4, and at SDCC, Cole Sprouse shared a big hint about that flash-forward at the end of season 3.
The final day at San Diego Comic-Con featured a bunch of big teases for Riverdale season 4. None of them were bigger than the revelation that Jughead is going to a new school. Cole Sprouse also dropped a major hint about THAT flash-forward scene.
It was revealed in the panel that Jughead will not be heading to Riverdale High to graduate with his fellow seniors and best friends, Archie, Betty, Veronica, and the rest of the gang. Instead, Jughead will be going to a new prestigious Prep school where, like we have seen before, Jughead will be the odd man out.
Sprouse shared details about the new school during the panel from Hall H at SDCC.
Here’s what Sprouse said about the new school, via TV Insider:
"“Jughead gets whisked away to a Gossip Girl/ Richie Rich-type school that’s pretentious."
At SDCC, Sprouse also confirmed that Jughead “will only be on Riverdale on the weekends,” which means he is staying at the Prep school during the week. And, that means he will probably be doing Prep school things during the week and not hanging out with his friends. Ah man!
It will be really interesting to see how that affects his relationship with Betty. It could bring them closer together, but there are always problems with distance, especially at first.
“I mean, the way it’s shaping them now it looks like they’re pretty good. But it wouldn’t surprise me if his lack of presence there is going to create some tension,” Sprouse said.
More interestingly, Sprouse mentioned that the Prep school with act as the “setting” for that flash-forward scene at the end of season 3 with Betty, Veronica, and Archie standing around a fire covered in blood. Archie, then, throws Jughead’s beanie on the fire.
“I think the narrative that we’re exploring this year is the prep school narrative, which is going to serve as the setting that the flash-forward is taking place within,” said Sprouse. “It’s this sort of pretentious, rich school that Jughead just sort of gets thrown into.”
Wow.

I think many of us, at the end of season 3, thought that the flash-forward scene was somehow related to the events of the last season. I was thinking it could have something to do with Hiram, Penelope, or the FBI. There’s been a lot of villainy in Riverdale, and Jughead is responsible for taking down different parts of these crimes.
Instead, it seems like the flash-forward was alluding to something we haven’t even seen yet. That blood might belong to some character we haven’t met at this point in the series. That’s actually really cool, and it shows the thought and ideas the writers are putting into this part of the story for the craziest small town.
I think there’s going to be some dark underbelly of this Prep school, and I think Jughead will probably get in a little too deep. Hopefully, it won’t be deep enough to get him killed, but someone is definitely dying. Again, hopefully, it won’t be him.
According to TVInsider, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teased that fans will get to see the buildup to that flash-forward scene in the other episodes prior to that episode. Here’s what he said during the panel:
"“The mystery of what happened to Jughead will be big. In the episodes leading up to it, we’re going to flash-forward to events that will help put the pieces together.”"
Well, that’s interesting! It sounds like they are really starting to talk about it as “what happened to Jughead,” and I don’t like that. Fingers crossed that he was just passed out or injured or anything but dead!
Riverdale season 4 premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 9. New episodes will air weekly on Netflix outside of the United States. The full season will be released on Netflix US in May 2020.
