Riverdale season 4: Everything revealed during the SDCC 2019 panel
By Bryce Olin
Jughead is moving to a different school, Shannen Doherty joins the season premiere, and everything fans learned at the Riverdale panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019.
It was Riverdale’s turn on Sunday, July 21, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. The hit CW show brought creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and stars Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes, Madelaine Petsch and KJ Apa for the Riverdale panel from Hall H to talk Riverdale season 4. And, they gave fans some big news!
The panel started with an emotional tribute video to Luke Perry that ended with a picture of Perry with the caption “We Love You, Luke.” Then, the panel kicked off with the stars taking the stage and answering questions from moderator Leanne Aguilera of Entertainment Tonight.
Below, you’ll find everything fans learned during the Riverdale panel.
Shannen Doherty has joined the cast for the season 4 premiere
That’s right; Aguirre-Sacasa shared the news with fans that Luke Perry’s co-star from Beverly Hills, 90210 will be making an appearance in the season 4 premiere, “In Memoriam,” which is a tribute to Luke Perry.
We don’t know who she is playing, and it doesn’t sound like she’ll be in much more of the season, but this is going to be great.
Jughead is moving to a new school
Jughead is moving on from Riverdale High in season 4. He will be going to a prestigious prep school in the new season, and as he mentioned in a press roundtable with Netflix Life from SDCC, he’ll only be back in Riverdale, interacting with the characters we know and love, on the weekends.
"“I know that he’s only back in Riverdale on the weekends. That’s all I really know.”"
And, during the panel, Sprouse was sure that will add some drama to the Bughead relationship.

There will be a Halloween episode
Aguirre-Sacasa teased a Halloween episode for the first time in Riverdale history. He didn’t share much, but the episode will air on Oct. 30. And, we’ll see our favorite characters in costume. Aguirre-Sacasa even mentioned that a few of the cast members might even be wearing costumes of characters from the Arrowverse!
Oh, and someone is going to die. Don’t worry, though, it won’t be one of the cast members who participated in the panel.

Cheryl and Veronica will be teaming up in a business venture
Petsch and Mendes teased a new business venture for Cheryl and Veronica in the new season, and they will get into “sticky trouble,” according to Petsch.
You guys, it’s something to do with maple syrup. Mendes may have dropped a hint during the panel, but we don’t want to spoil the surprise for fans who weren’t there!
There’s going to be another musical
I think we all saw this coming. Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed there’s another musical in season 4, but he doesn’t know what that musical will be, or he’s not sharing it with fans yet.
When talking with press prior to the panel, Petsch was asked what she wanted the musical to be and she mentioned she’d love the new musical to be Sweeney Todd. And, she has an idea as to who Cheryl would play.
"“Sweeney Todd, I know it’s a little on the nose. I understand. But I think it would be very fun. I don’t know who I would play. Maybe Sweeney Todd.”"
The Archies will become a real band in the new season
Who’s ready for some “Sugar, Sugar” in season 4?
In the next season, The Archies, the iconic band from the Archie comics and cartoons, will form, and the Core Four will all be in the band. We’ve got Archie on lead vocals and guitar, Betty on the tambourine, Jughead on drums, and Veronica on the ‘board. And, The Archies will compete in a Battle of the Bands!
Veronica struggles to get into colleges
Mendes shared a few fun facts about Veronica’s journey during the panel. From the sound of things, Ronny is dealing with the wrath of her father, Hiram, this season. Hiram has “paparazzi” following Veronica and writing about her. At the time, she’s also applying for colleges, and Hiram’s plan sounds like it adds a little more drama in Veronica’s life and makes it harder to get into school.
Mendes didn’t stop there, though. Later in the panel, she revealed that Veronica is going to meet a new relative who was previously unknown to her. Interesting!
There’s a new Principal at Riverdale High
Kerr Smith has been cast to play Principal Honey in the new season. As you recall, Principal Weatherbee disappeared with the Farm at the end of the season. Someone has to take over as Principal at Riverdale High, and we now know who it is!
Smith is best known for his work on Dawson’s Creek and Charmed. This is a great casting decision, and I have no doubt Smith is going to be a great addition to the series. If the show is good at anything, it’s finding incredible talent for these roles.
Riverdale and Katy Keene Crossover is happening
Riverdale and Katy Keene are getting a crossover! We don’t know when it is happening or any of the details, but that was the word for Aguirre-Sacasa at the panel. It will be really interesting to see how that happens.
He also shared that Ashleigh Murray will make her return in the season 4 premiere.
Still no word on that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina crossover, though!
That’s pretty much it for the new from the show’s panel at SDCC 2019. Netflix Life was lucky enough to interview the team that participated in the Riverdale panel, and we’ll have more stories and the interviews coming later this week.
Stay tuned for more news about season 4!
