Stranger Things 3 is hands down the most fun season in the series, but it does come to a crushing finale.

Man, and here I thought Bob Newby’s (Sean Astin) death in season 2 was soul-crushing. Who would have imagined Stranger Things 3 would break our hearts even more? Seriously, spoilers ahead for episode 8, “Chapter 8: The Battle of Starcourt.”

SPOILER ALERT! DON’T CONTINUE READING IF YOU HAVEN’T FINISHED STRANGER THINGS 3!

Don’t let that fun episode title fool you, because I sure did! I believed we’d get an action-packed episode with the deaths of Billy (Dacre Montgomery) and a few bystanders, but not Jim Hopper (David Harbour).

Jim and El’s (Millie Bobby Brown) deaths are probably what Stranger Things fans feared the most going into season 3, and part of that nightmare came true in the finale episode. But is Jim truly dead or could he still be alive somehow? Let’s look at the facts!

At the start of season 3, we see something similar happen to what presumably took Jim’s life. All of the workers standing near the machine used to open the Upside Down were obliterated, and painfully so! Jim was standing just as close as the others were, so he should be gone — but did we SEE it happen?

The short answer to this is, no. And if you’re a longtime movie and TV junkie, you know one of the rules about deaths: If you don’t see it, it didn’t happen. Can that be applied here? Yes!

Call us fans in denial, but we won’t believe it until we see it!

It’s possible Jim was transported to another part of the world, possibly Russia, or even a different reality like the Upside Down. He could have been knocked through the opening and into the Upside Down.

But we did not actually see him die, therefore we have hope. Sure, a few months have passed, but don’t forget that Will (Noah Schnapp) also disappeared when he was taken.

What’s your take? Do you believe Jim Hopper is truly gone? If not, what could have saved him?

Stranger Things 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
