Stranger Things 3: How is (SPOILER) still alive?
By Ariba Bhuvad
Stranger Things 3 left us with a few big questions, including how the heck is the Demogorgon still alive? Spoilers ahead!
Stranger Things 3 ended with an epic post-credit scene that toyed with our emotions a bit, but it also brought forth a very important question.
There are spoilers for Stranger Things 3 below! Turn back if you haven’t finished the season.
How the heck is the Demogorgon still alive?! Didn’t Eleven get rid of this thing back in season 1?
The post-credit scene takes us to Kamchatka, Russia, where officers pull out one of their prisoners and throw him into a cage. A few moments later, much to our surprise, they released the Demogorgon to do its thing.
Based on how it was looking, it’s probably been there for quite some time but how the heck is it there and still alive? There are multiple theories floating around online, but unfortunately, there are few clear-cut answers.
Inverse explains it in a pretty interesting way, so we shared a bit of their analysis along with our thoughts below.
Is the Demogorgon from season 1? Or is it just another one that’s been casually hanging around in Russia? What if the Russians conducted top-secret experiments and created their very own?
I know, I’m getting way ahead of myself, but just think about it. Given everything we’ve seen in Stranger Things so far, the idea of cloning experiments isn’t that ridiculous.
Back in season 1, we saw Eleven kill the Demogorgon but also witnessed both her and the creature turn into ash Infinity War style. If season 2 and 3 taught us anything it’s that turning into ash doesn’t mean you’re dead. While Eleven ended up in the Upside Down and got out through the rift, we never really knew what happened to the Demogorgon.

Did it actually die or did it escape the Upside Down like Eleven and somehow just ended up in Russia? And what if that’s why the Russians even care about the Upside Down and everything that comes with? Possibly.
Looking back at season 2 of Stranger Things, we learned all about the Demodogs and their connection to the Mind Flayer. Naturally, they all died when the gate was closed but let’s not forget that the Demogorgon from season 1 was completely separate, at least as far as we know. So this tells us that maybe we’ve got multiple Demogorgons which could also mean that there is one more than one Mind Flayer out there. Oh my, can you imagine that?
If this Demogorgon is not separate from the rest of the Upside Down, that could mean that the Russians figured out how to keep the gate to the Upside Down open, allowing the Demogorgon to survive. If so, that means the Mind Flayer could come back.
It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibilities to theorize that there is a Russian version of Eleven out there somewhere that is the missing link between Russia and the Upside Down. Honestly, this would explain a lot, but I guess we’ll have to wait for the Duffer Brothers to explain exactly what is going on in season 4.
