Even though there aren’t a lot of huge, highly anticipated, summer blockbuster-level Netflix original movies premiering this month, the original movies that are premiering this month are definitely worth hyping up and checking out on release day. Point Blank, an action thriller that competes with any movie of the genre currently in theaters, arrives in the middle of July to add some quality entertainment to those mid-summer doldrums.

Based on the 2010 French film of the same name, Point Blank stars Anthony Mackie as Paul, an emergency room nurse, is forced to team up with Abe (Frank Grillo), a wounded career criminal (oh, and a murder suspect, no less) under his care, to find his kidnapped pregnant wife. As Abe and Paul fend off rival gangs and the usual corrupt cops typical of action movies, the odd couple put each of their strengths to use in order to survive what’s become the fight of their lives.

Point Blank comes from director Joe Lynch, who also helmed such projects as Wrong Turn 2: Dead End and the Salma Hayek action thriller Everly. The film boasts a formidable leading pair in Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo and also stars Marcia Gay Harden. Even though movies like this don’t perform as well as they used to, Netflix’s stab at the action thriller will no doubt find its footing with fans of the genre. Be sure to catch Point Blank’s premiere on July 12.
