Remember not so long ago when it felt like pretty much every movie was based on a Nicholas Sparks novel? While that might be hyperbole, the author has had 11 of his novels turned into films between the years 1999 and 2016. Sparks recently hit the headlines for a not-so shining reason and his hold on the box office has stalled. But one of the author’s page-to-screen stories comes to Netflix this July for a reminder of the simpler times.

Based on the novel of the same name, Nights in Rodanthe stars Diane Lane as Adrienne Willis, who comes to the small beachside town of Rodanthe, North Carolina with life teeming with chaos. While in Rodanthe, she seeks to clean up the messes in her orbit as she looks after a friend’s inn for a weekend that will turn into one to remember. Adrienne hits it off with the inn’s only guest, Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere), and together they weather both literal and figurative storms through a whirlwind romance.

Nights in Rodanthe marked Diane Lane and Richard Gere’s third time appearing on-screen together after 1984’s The Cotton Club and 2002’s Unfaithful. The film received mostly negative reception form critics, but it still managed to pull out a win at the box office, bringing in an impressive worldwide gross of over $84 million. If you’re still a fan of the hyper-dramatic, beachy romance genre of films as well as its leading movie stars, you will surely enjoy catching Nights in Rodanthe 11 years later when it arrives on Netflix at the top of the month.
