Even though it seems like reboots, remakes, and revivals have just recently started taking over the film and television industries (there has been a noted boom), they have been happening all around us, all the time, for many years. Whether we want them or not, Hollywood dusts off popular properties and repackages them for a new audience. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they’re The Pink Panther and The Pink Panther 2, both of which come to Netflix in July.

Based on the franchise of films of the same name, The Pink Panther centers on not-so-smart Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Steve Martin) as he investigates the thieves who have snatched a murdered soccer player’s ring. Thanks to his many mistakes, he winds up an asset on the case. The Pink Panther 2 finds Clouseau and a dream team of investigators looking into a crime spree of a notorious cat burglar across Europe. Once again, Clouseau’s clueless outlook saves the day.

Upon release, The Pink Panther received poor reviews from critics, resulting in its 22% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences seemed to enjoy the film as the box office topped out at $158.9 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. The Pink Panther fared even worse with critics, earning a %12 on Rotten Tomatoes and barely breaking even with its $70 million budget. Nonetheless, films are more than their commercial and critics fortunes. Relive the reboot when both films begin streaming on Netflix at the top of the month.
