There are few things we love more than a good parody. And in the right hands, parody can be truly artful. Megamind, an animated superhero comedy from 2010, landed some of the best voices possible to sell its spoof-filled narrative with comedy stars like Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Jonah Hill. The film pokes fun at superhero films and their good versus evil rhetoric, and it’s without a doubt one of the best new release movies this month that the whole family can watch together.

Megamind follows the exploits of the world’s most brilliant supervillain Megamind (Will Ferrell), but he’s also the world’s least successful supervillain. His efforts at villainy are always tanked by the heroic Metro Man (Brad Pitt), but when he finally defeats Metro Man, Megamind realizes his lack of purpose. Being so, he creates a new enemy in Titan (Jonah Hill), but he soon decides to turn to become a bad guy rather than a hero, forcing Megamind to redirect his path.

Upon release, Megamind earned mixed reception from critics, though netted a respectable 72% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though the film grossed almost $322 million worldwide against a budget of $130 million, it was one of DreamWorks Animation’s lowest grossing films. The possibility of a sequel was later squashed as the studio started to move away from animated parodies. However, the whole family can enjoy Megamind, which turns 10 next year, on Netflix when it begins streaming at the top of the month.
