“Sacrificing” herself to kill the Demogorgon

The Demogorgon was very much the primary antagonist of the first season of the show and was responsible for much of the trouble throughout the show so far that fans knew that the season could really have no other ending than a confrontation between the monster and Eleven.

Eleven knows that she is at least indirectly responsible for bringing the Demogorgon into this world, so she knows she must be the one to take it out.

We have seen Eleven grow throughout the first season into a hero who does whatever she can to protect those that she cares for. When her friends are corned by the beast, we know it’s going to be a showdown, and indeed it is. Despite the monsters terrifying presence and killer instincts, we also know by now that Eleven is no slouch herself and can take on the beast by herself.

It takes all of Eleven’s might to destroy the beast, but in the end, she is successful, like we all knew she would be, but at a cost.

In the battle with the Demogorgon, Eleven disappears alongside her foe, leaving the boys, especially Mike, wondering where she went, what happened to her and if she’s still alive.

While the battle is definitely as emotionally impactful as it is exciting, it still leaves the viewer with a bit of hope since the possibility of Eleven in the Upside Down is still real. And, of course, we now know that Eleven never really did die, but that doesn’t make this moment, when she was prepared to do just that, any less meaningful.

This moment shows Eleven’s strength of character, her determination to do what’s right and her grit in the face of danger all wrapped up into one which makes it a satisfying conclusion to her character arc in the first season.
