First kiss with Mike

The last episode of season 1 sees the group preparing to find Will in the upside down while in the school. The boys and Eleven are hiding out there waiting for Nancy to arrive. During this downtime, Mike and Eleven have a conversation that culminates in Mike and Eleven kissing for the first, but not last, time.

This is one of my favorite scenes from the first season of the show. It has many great touches that have been seeded throughout the season. Eleven mentions her love of Eggos (despite Mike insisting that their not “real” food, whatever THAT means). She repeats her catchphrase “friends don’t lie,” and this conversation is also the first mention of the snowball dance, which we eventually see as the culmination of season 2.

The scene is also a look into what makes the relationship between Eleven and the boys so interesting. They have to explain many of the things about childhood to Eleven who never got to experience those things growing up, so she learns about them from her new friends. Her understanding is now colored through how these boys understand things, which isn’t always so clear.

This scene sees Mike trying to explain what being a girl/boyfriend means and he really struggles to do that. So, rather than trying to explain it with words, he steals a kiss from her. It is a moment that has been building throughout the season as the two have grown closer, and it’s clear that they both really enjoy it.

This scene is also a great bit of showcase acting from both Finn Wolfhard and Millie Bobby Brown, and it’s clear that they both fully understand their characters. Their chemistry is also clear and their relationship is all the more believable because of it.
