Dumplin’ is based on the young adult novel by the same name from author Julie Murphy. The comedy serves as a coming-of-age tale as it displays many important life lessons. It was released on Netflix in December of last year but it would go well during a summer movie binge.

The movie follows Willowdean Dickson (Macdonald) who goes by “Will” to most people but was given the nickname “Dumplin” from her mother Rosie (Aniston). Will never got along well with her mother and was mostly raised by her aunt Lucy until she passed away. The teen was then thrust into her mother’s role in local beauty pageants, something Will despises. As the daughter of a former beauty queen, Will decides to sign up for a pageant as a way to protest. Her action motivates other unlikely girls to also sign up.

Willowdean is a plus-size teen with the hopes of revolutionizing the perception of women who perform in beauty pageants. Along the way, Will and Rosie get a better understanding of one another as a mother and daughter. There are many heartfelt moments in Dumplin’ and plenty of laughs.
