1. Close gate

Episode: “Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer” (Season 2)

If there was any question about Noah Schnapp’s acting as Will in Stranger Things I think this moment would answer that.

After Mike realizes that the Mind Flayer is controlling Will and using him as a spy, the group concludes that they must lure the monster out of Will if everything is to return to normal. After sedating Will to calm the “demodogs”, Mike, Joyce, Jonathan, Nancy, Lucas, Steve, Dustin, and Max disguise the Byers’ tool shed to something Will wouldn’t recognize and tie him up to prevent him from escaping.

More from Stranger Things

They try to remind Will of who he really is by reminiscing on old memories from when he was younger. Joyce talks about how Will gave another kid his toy truck and Mike shares the first time they met and when they became friends. This leads to a montage of the group sharing their favorite moments with Will as The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” plays in the background.

Eventually, Hopper notices Will tapping something in morse code on the leg of his chair. Through communication to those waiting inside the house, they find out he is saying “CLOSE GATE”. That’s the only way the Mind Flayer can be stopped.

I always get choked up at this scene, especially when Mike is talking about their friendship. Seeing Will’s face in this is incredible. It’s almost as if he is there but also disconnected. It’s like Will is peeking through ever so slightly.

It’s so hard to pick only five moments because there are so many more times when Will shines in Stranger Things. What are some of your favorite moments from Will Byers? Let us know in the comments!
