The Handmaid’s Tale used to feel like anything could happen. Now it feels like no matter what, nothing will happen to June — and that could become a serious problem for the show.

Part of the appeal that shows like The Handmaid’s Tale brings is the notion is that no character is safe, especially in a world as cruel as Gilead. Game of Thrones played with this idea successfully for years and years, and we always watched the show knowing in the back of our heads that getting attached was a bad idea. The reason — we could lose our favorites at any time.

Now, I’m not saying we necessarily enjoyed this feeling, but we got used to it and hey, we continued watching despite the inevitable. The message we should take away from this is that life can be unpredictable, and viewers are often willing to give shows many chances at surprising them in ways which mirror reality.

The Handmaid’s Tale has tried to play with our emotions this way, and in its first two seasons, it’s sort of managed it. Plenty of bad things have happened to a wide variety of characters, after all, so it’d be absurd to say that the show doesn’t give us a realistic story. Nevertheless, it feels more and more like June (Elisabeth Moss) will come out mostly unscathed — regardless of what takes place.

It is worth mentioning that sometimes characters are supposed to be impervious to their surroundings — that very short list includes June. While things happen around, and even to her in some instances, we’re not really worried about June. Should we be though? Or is her plot armor so thick we’re absolutely sure nothing can ever touch her? The answer isn’t simple but we’re certain the last one can be answered by with a resounding “yes”.

All in all, we’re positive the show will continue to put June in the middle of everything as she’ll undoubtedly have to make difficult choices. And while those events may even make the show more interesting, it’s fair to say that June isn’t in any real danger. Plot armor is, after all, the best kind of armor.
