In episode four of FX’s The Weekly, the series’ lead reporters will investigate the strange collision between a couple bicycling and a stray group of ISIS soldiers. Keep reading for a preview.

So far, The Weekly hasn’t disappointed with its’ no-holds-barred approach to tackling investigative journalism. This doesn’t surprise us considering the New York Times is the newspaper in charge of writing up the stories told on the new FX series but what is surprising are the inherent dangers in just trying to get the story.

In this week’s upcoming episode, The Times’ team will interview members of ISIS — individuals with knowledge of what happened to Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan on July 26, 2017. Keep in mind the dangers are all too real for the journalists simply taking their statements.

To sum up the case quickly, Austin and Geoghegan were bicycling along a ride in Tajikistan when a group of ISIS militants ran over them, killing Austin, Geoghegan, and two others in the process. A few days later, the Islamic State released a video which confirmed they were indeed responsible for the heinous act and vowed to kill all “disbelievers” too.

What The Times’ reporters have done is get the whole story because Austin and Geoghegan weren’t just more casualties in the war with ISIS — they were people with tremendous lives ahead of them. The reason we know this is because of the testimonials given by Geoghegan’s and Austin’s friends following their deaths.

According to their friends, Austin and Geoghegan uprooted their entire lives to bicycle around the world. They planned several months in advance to part ways with their everyday jobs to experience the world. Geoghegan and Austin didn’t intend to have an extended vacation, they meticulously prepared for a life on the road. Jay Austin even quit his job at the Department of Housing and Urban Development before leaving, confirming his intent to leave permanently. Geoghegan did the same but it was Austin who persuaded her to follow suit.

Unfortunately, the optimistic couple wound up becoming unwitting victims of the Islamic State. They died in a violent collision that was unnecessary and more of these brutal attacks continue to happen. There’s no telling when they’ll stop but there’s hope now that more people can see ISIS is far from extinct.
