3. The Last Kingdom

In England during the 9th century, there are seven kingdoms vying for power. (Sounds familiar Game of Thrones fans?) The Anglo-Saxons rule most of the land but are also in contention with Viking clans who plunder and attack those lands, effectively controlling them.

Uhtred, the main character, is taken by these Viking clans and lives his life with these people. The Vikings that he had been raised by are attacked and he is forced on the run. Eventually, his worlds collide as his uncle seeks to kill him to establish his rule over Bebbanburg, Uhtred’s birthplace. He must then decide which path to choose, his birthright and heritage, or the people who raised him in the Viking world.

The series is based on The Saxon Stories series by Bernard Cornwell. Netflix picked up the show after its first season and is set to release its fourth season. The Last Kingdom has become one of the top shows on the platform, seeing fans of the aforementioned Game of Thrones pick up the show to get their fix of medieval storytelling during those long breaks. It has also been a highly recommended show to fans of the History Channel’s Vikings.

The series is set in England of, of course, but finding takes place mainly in Hungary. The wide-open landscapes and large battle scenes give that Braveheart feel to the show, and its authenticity. Another factor to the success of the show is its historical relevancy. The show is loosely based on books, which are in turn loosely based on historical events around the same time period.
