6. Bodyguard

The smash hit of 2018, Bodyguard took the internet by storm and delivered one of the more compelling action thrillers in only six episodes. Richard Madden stars as PS David Budd, a veteran who has taken a job with Protection Command and is assigned to Julia Montague MP, played by Keeley Hawes.

From the start, it is unclear where his allegiance lies as Montague is outspoken in her support of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, which David served in one. The escalation of tension builds and builds as threats against David’s family and Montague herself are levied and acted upon, while the two of them grow closer and closer emotionally.

Once again, the BBC is topping the list on the best shows to watch on Netflix. Bodyguard delivers on multiple fronts with political storytelling and focusing heavily on the development of each character. David is battling through a divorce and trying to maintain his active involvement with his children, but his assignment is demanding. This comes to a head when a terror plot is successfully completed and his involvement is questioned.

For American audiences, the peek into the world of British politics is still a very intriguing premise. We’re still insanely interested in the culture of other countries as ours is in a state of turmoil. The added bonus that this series focuses on the corruption and terrorism threats that all major governments face gives Bodyguard a wide range of viewer.
