9. Narcos

Much like the Ted Bundy interest this past year, a few years ago there was a huge interest in Pablo Escobar. Narcos is based around Escobar’s rise to power in the drug world. It depicts his transition into cocaine manufacturing and selling from moving illegal goods in trucks across borders and into Colombia. The series also centers around the American DEA agents who were tracking Escobar and dealing with the ramifications of his drug empire bleeding into the United States.

Not only is the widespread drug empire featured in Escobar’s rise to fame, but his community efforts to produce safe water or to get certain laws passed are also focused on as well. OF course, these actions were ultimately self-serving but still benefitted the community greatly. He was a man of the people and funneled large amounts of cash into the poverty-stricken areas where he lived.

This is an American series but the vast majority of the show is set in Colombia where the cartel grows and manufactures its products. The show travels around South America to neighboring cartels and countries where Escobar tried to build his empire. Also, this is how he escaped from prison a few times.

The show has three seasons with actors like Wagner Rocha, Pedro Pascal, Boyd Holbrook, and Luis Guzman. It was met with critical acclaim and even earned a few Emmy nominations in 2016.  Additionally, the show “spun off” into Narcos: Mexico where the story features the rise of the Guadalajara drug cartel.
