11. Cable Girls

Many of the foreign language entries on Netflix are highly rated. Cable Girls or Las Chicas del Cable is no exception.

The Spanish series revolves around a telecommunications company operating in Madrid in 1928. Four women are the main perspectives, showing their lives in relation to their families, their jobs, and of course the hardships endured by women in those days. Not to mention the hardship faced by women who wanted careers. These women work as switchboard operators but also find themselves wrapped up in workplace drama as well as dipping into the criminal world.

Cable Girls is the first Spanish series on Netflix and is about to air its fourth season. The highly successful show captured audiences with the themes presented by its four main female characters. The highlighting of women’s rights in the 1920s may sound so far removed from our world, but those issues are still prevalent today, albeit in different issues. In the 1920s and into the 1930s in Spain, women were second-class citizens with little to no rights.

Outside of those heavy-handed topics and navigating the world of men and women in those times, is a beautifully shot and designed series. Period pieces are usually for niche audiences as the smallest details are defined by the creators to maintain integrity. No coffee cups from local coffee houses here. The visual aspects of the series are enough to recommend it to just about anyone.
