12. Happy Valley

Tragedy befalls a police sergeant when her daughter dies and her life falls into shambles. A divorce, a drug-addicted sister, and her grandson to care for all mount up on this woman living in West Yorkshire, England. She catches word that the man who assaulted her daughter is out of prison and unbeknownst to her, is involved in a kidnapping scheme. The sergeant, Catherine Cawood, begins to close in on the kidnapper and his partners.

Crime dramas are a great way to reel viewers in since most Americans are extremely familiar with the genre. From procedurals like Law and Order to the forensic detective franchise of CSI, most users will be intrigued by a different approach. Not that police work is any different in England, but the cultural difference helps to entice the familiar cop-drama viewers.

The series was a hit and returned for a seconds season that delved farther into the human trafficking scheme used by the local criminals. More twists and blackmail occur that force some corrupted officers to take action. The second season also delivered rave reviews and in turn, earned the show a third season.

Although most police dramas can feasibly exist forever, sometimes its best to tell a story and let it be. However, with the recent cancellations at Netflix, there would be a clamor of anger if this beloved show was axed.
