The official synopsis for Stranger Things 3 was revealed by Netflix and confirmed some fans’ fears.  The new season premieres on the Fourth of July.

Netflix shared the official synopsis for Stranger Things 3! We’re only three weeks away from the season 3 release, and now we finally know what this new season is going to be about. Bloody Disgusting first reported the news of the synopsis.

Many of the points in the synopsis are things that have been touched on or reference in teasers, trailers, and interviews. It’s still great to see the premise of Stranger Things 3 laid out before us.

We shared the synopsis below, via Netflix:

"It’s 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana, and summer’s heating up. School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Meanwhile, danger looms. When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, Eleven and her friends are reminded that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear."

There’s a lot to break down in that synopsis, but I don’t think we’re learning anything new or information that wasn’t at least hinted at in the Stranger Things 3 trailer. We’ve known for a long time that this is considered the “summer of love” in Hawkins, and that seems to be what is being referenced in the first part of the synopsis.

More from Stranger Things

This idea of the Party growing up without growing apart is really interesting, too. We’ve already seen some cracks start to form. Dustin was by himself for a good chunk of Stranger Things 2, as was Eleven, although not by her choice. I think this is a theme everyone can relate to, and that should be really interesting to see how it all plays out in season 3.

We all knew Hawkins wasn’t going to turn into Disney World over the course of a year. There will be some really fun moments, sure, but this Netflix series is dark, and from the synopsis, it sounds like there is danger lurking around every corner. That doesn’t sound good for our Hawkins Heroes!

The one thing I love about Stranger Things is how this show puts its characters before the plot. Often, shows get bogged down in plot and focus on getting to a battle, big reveal or another point. When that happens, character development can get neglected, and the audience feels cheated in a sense.

The Duffer Brothers and Stranger Things writers don’t do that. They take the time to develop characters and show us how the characters are feeling in almost every scene. This synopsis proves that will continue in the new season.

The synopsis references the “enemies,” but most importantly, it goes into much more detail on what the characters are facing, both personally and as a group, in the new season. That should be reassuring for fans of this series.

Stranger Things 3 is coming to Netflix on Thursday, July 4! We can’t wait to see what happens!
