9. The Witcher

The hit Polish book series by Andrzej Sapkowski  and video game is now being turned into a Netflix series. While the hype has been mixed, especially with the announcement and picture of Henry Cavill playing the lead role of Geralt of Rivia, the buzz around The Witcher is sure to make it one of the most-watched shows when it comes out.

It will most likely be released in November or December of this year.

The story follows Geralt, a monster hunter who is trying to find where he fits in a world where people are sometime more evil than the beasts he hunts. Geralt, as a witcher, developed supernatural abilities at a young age in order to defeat these beasts.

But fate has its eyes set on him for other purposes as well, and he will soon be met by a sorceress and a secretive princess. Together, they must fight to make their way across the Continent.

The world known only as The Continent is very different from ours. There are vampires, elves, gnomes, dwarves, halflings, dryads, and werewolves. The Continent was settled by elves but was then colonized by human invaders starting a series of wars. The humans won, making everyone else second-class citizens (Sapkowski clearly looked to history for his inspiration).

It’s unclear how much of the books the series will cover.

Besides Henry Cavill, the series will also star Freya Allan as Ciri, the princess of Cintra who can control space and time, Anna Shaffer as Triss, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer (described as Geralt’s “soul mate”), and Millie Brady as Princess Renfri.
