9. Cheryl’s lockup in conversion therapy

If you hadn’t gotten the program, there are dozens upon dozens of moments in Riverdale that make us all sit up, look around, and go, “Wait, is this really happening?!”

To say we didn’t wholly understand the depth of that sentiment until midway through the second season would be an understatement. While a series’ worth of crazy unpredictability had gone down in a mere 20 some odd episodes, the show’s dedication to “going there” fully arrived with Cheryl’s conversion therapy.

This storyline collectively made what felt like the entire internet stood up and inquired how this series that’s so ingrained in fantasy and camp and horror would pull off a touchy topic like conversion therapy. Because the fact of the matter is, conversion therapy still exists and it’s a very real and very unfortunate and very triggering issue to tackle.

So, when Cheryl’s mother tossed her in the Sisters of Quiet Mercy and threw away the key, Riverdale really went there.

Cheryl had displayed behavior suggesting she struggled with her sexuality, including her obsessive actions toward Josie and sending her a pig heart. Paired with Cheryl’s vocal accusations that her father’s equally evil twin Claudius and her mother were out to get her and her mother’s disapproval of her relationship with Toni, Cheryl suffered through a horrible program at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy.

Luckily, Betty, Veronica, and Toni had the good sense to break her out, but Riverdale managed to tactfully navigate this harrowing depiction of heartbreaking reality.
