13. Chic arrives… and so does Charles

The second that Alice admitted that as a teenager, she gave birth to FP’s child, a son she gave up for adoption at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy (always deserving of a “yikes!”), it was only a matter of time before this long-lost sibling of Betty’s would arrive in Riverdale.

In season 2, Betty hits the investigative to locate her brother and tracks down Charles, a.k.a. Chic, at a seedy hostel in Centerville. He soon moves into their home, continuing his work in “fantasy fulfillment” as a cam boy and being just plain creepy.

Throughout his initial appearance in the second season, Chic ranked high on the list of suspects for the Black Hood, but he was later chased down by the actual serial killer and presumed dead. Chic, who isn’t the real Charles Smith, even did some killing himself, but we’ll get into that twist later.

However, the Black Hood didn’t kill Chic, and he returns in the season 3 finale, having been groomed by both the Black Hood and Penelope Blossom to assume the Gargoyle King persona.

As if Chic’s entire run on Riverdale didn’t bring enough shocking twists so emblematic of this series, Betty and Jughead come face-to-face with an FBI agent by the name of Charles Smith, who claims to be their real, not-dead biological half-brother. With any luck, three seasons of trauma and trust issues should lead them to be wary of Chic 2.0.

Ironically, he has been working with Alice on taking down The Farm from the inside, but as is the standard on Riverdale, the truth is a fickle mistress that brings characters back from the dead and out of the woodwork.
