14. Gladys Jones, the drug kingpin

If you’ve watched even just one episode of Riverdale, it’s abundantly evident that the parents are the villains. Not in the typical sense of villainy that parents can often play in teen dramas, like laying strict boundaries for their children or any other supposedly stifling form of parent. No, these parents are actual devils, save for Luke Perry’s Fred Andrews, who is the one parents we have been able to consistently trust and stan.

But Gladys Jones? Oh, she’s trouble.

Just when we’d forgotten that we hadn’t met Jughead’s long-lost mother (and sister, Jellybean), Jug and Archie turn up on the doorstep of her junkyard for refuge. At first, she appears like the rough-around-the-edges mother of your dreams, the exact nonchalant cool Alice Cooper wishes she could project on a daily basis.

But once she and Jellybean packed their bags and arrived in Riverdale, the mask came off and the real Gladys Jones showed her face.

Before long, Jughead realizes that his mother has become a major producer and distributor of Fizzle Rocks, a fake but potent drug to give Jingle Jangle a real run for its money. Gladys practically steamrolls through Riverdale and runs the drug trade, getting herself into Hiram’s crosshairs and ultimately pairing up with the town’s ominous Man in Black.

It’s when Gladys creates the harmful strain of Fizzle Rocks called G (real creative) that Jughead intervenes and sends her packing. Between murderers, drug dealers, and serial killers, this show’s parents are a rare teen drama breed.
