1. The unexpected Gargoyle King reveal

For much of season 3, the Gargoyle King mystery didn’t have a clear path to resolution. Truly, the reveal could have gone in multiple directions.

It’s pure, unadulterated, classic Riverdale through and through. When you look up the word “twist” in the dictionary, a description of the third season finale should be included in the definition because Penelope Blossom’s confession to masterminding the whole operation came from left field.

But even though Penelope pulling the strings for both the Black Hood and the Gargoyle King felt like a blindside, it makes a lot of sense when you break it down.

She was adopted into an arranged marriage from the Sisters of Quiet Mercy and her husband killed her son. That’s not to condone her killings, but let’s just say the motivation is in plain sight. On top of poisoning bad men Including her husband) as the Red Dahlia, Penelope inspired Hal’s Black Hood rampage and enlisted Chic to pose as Jason underneath the Gargoyle King mask.

Naturally, the odds and ends of spearheading the revenge mission and spreading Gryphons & Gargoyles around town involved a lot of careful, complicated scheming on Penelope’s part.

After all, she has been the real villain of the series for the past two seasons. Can you believe that one, another parent is deeply evil and two, Riverdale made a now-obvious connection between two of its biggest mysteries? What’s next, Penelope revealing she founded The Farm?

Well, they will have to find her first because the Red Dahlia escaped the scene of her crimes. Plot twist: She’ll be back.
