2. Incest secrets and maple syrup feuds

Teen drama series are often incestuous in that the characters swap significant others and remain friends like it’s totally normal. (Looking at you the most, One Tree Hill.) But Riverdale went ahead and turned up the incest dial from figurative to literal.

Part of untangling the mystery of Jason Blossom’s murder involved digging deeper into the origins of the Blossom family, which unearthed skeletons (figurative skeletons — that distinction is important with this show) buried deep in the basement.

Because of a matter of maple syrup dating decades back on the timeline, the Blossoms and the Coopers haven’t gotten along. In fact, the Coopers didn’t exist until they changed their name from Blossom.

As the lore goes, Hal’s grandfather and Clifford’s grandfather engaged in a power struggle over the maple syrup business, resulting in one brother (Clifford’s grandfather) to murder the other (Hal’s grandfather). From there, the Blossoms and the Coopers severed all ties and passed down that grudge from generation to generation.

But keeping that secret led to Jason and Polly not knowing that they are cousins by blood and conceiving two children together. Strangely, that’s a twist that everyone seems to forget about, even though Cheryl calls Betty “cousin” every chance she gets.

And if that wasn’t enough incest for you, Penelope was adopted by the Blossom family and later married her adoptive brother, Clifford. Blood or not, that’s one twisted twist to send your head spinning.
