6. Archie’s bear attack and prison fight club

If there were ever moments that made Riverdale fans squirm in question of its creative direction, they might have been Archie’s narrative arcs in the third season.

Of course, the second season concluded with Archie getting arrested for the murder of Cassidy, who the gang met on their vacation to the woods and had actually been murdered by one of Hiram’s henchman. Because why not, Hiram framed an actual teenager, his daughter’s boyfriend, for a crime he didn’t commit.

Unfortunately, his mother Mary (otherwise known as the iconic Molly Ringwald) and his lawyer couldn’t put up a strong enough fight in court to get Archie off, which leads Archie to confess to the murder rather than drag out a trial Hiram could wind up rigging anyway.

Our fearless hero goes to juvie, where he discovers an unsettling power struggle that involves the inmates fighting each other to basically the death. (These strings, you guessed it, are pulled by Hiram.) Like, where else would kids be throwing fists in a prison fight club than sweet ol’ Riverdale?

When Archie’s friends eventually plot his escape from the hellscape prison that’s supposedly a far cry from the new digs Hiram built, he goes on the run to the woods. But these are different woods than the ones that got him into this mess in the first place.

With his dog Vegas by his side, Archie settles in for a life off the grid, but a near-fatal meet-cute with a bear sends him into a harrowing hallucination and one of the many fights of his life. That’s right: In season 3, Archie was mauled by a bear, and KJ Apa will always have faux scars in his shirtless scenes to prove it.
