5. Are Daughter and Woman clones?

I’m not joking, one of my first thoughts while watching the movie was how much actresses Clara Rugaard and Hilary Swank resemble each other. During one particular scene, I thought Daughter was actually Woman. It’s when I commented on how they look like the young and older version of the same person. I dismissed this thought but slowly began to realize this was no casting coincidence.

Towards the end of the movie, we learn that yes, Daughter and Woman are in fact clones. We will get into all of the details about who exactly Woman is and what her purpose was, according to Mother. For now, here’s how we know Daughter and Woman are clones.

When Daughter makes the shocking discovery that she is not the first embryo Mother activated, she’s understandably distraught.

All embryos are in categories, labeled. You already know if you’ll get a male or female, for example. But, as it turns out, these are also divided by appearance. The three embryos Daughter finds missing, are all in the same storage.

Woman was the first, the second is the little girl we see in flashbacks, and Daughter is the third. This is why the little girl and Daughter are identical. We’re not sure what happened with the second girl who caused Mother to incinerate her.
