Designated Survivor season 3 is coming to Netflix tonight

Designated Survivor premieres on Netflix tonight. Designated Survivor season 3, starring Kiefer Sutherland, is coming exclusively to Netflix.

Designated Survivor is on Netflix tonight! The Kiefer Sutherland series was saved by Netflix after being canceled by ABC, and now Designated Survivor season 3 is a Netflix original.

The new season premieres on Netflix at 12:01 a.m. PT! Will you be staying up late to watch Designated Survivor season 3.

If you haven’t seen the show yet, here’s a quick summary: Tom Kirkman (played by Sutherland) is suddenly made President of the United States by default after everyone else in line ahead of him is killed in a terrorist attack during the State of the Union.

While Kirkman attempts to navigate the professional and personal pitfalls of suddenly having to be the most powerful person in the entire world, FBI agent Hannah Wells (Maggie Q, Nikita) tries to get to the bottom of the attack that caused his involuntary promotion.

The first two seasons of the show were trying to mix political drama and conspiracy thriller, with a little more in the latter direction. Season 3 has a new showrunner in Neal Baer (Law & Order: SVU) and new ideas. Both the previous seasons are now on Netflix.

The two most interesting cast additions are Anthony Edwards (ER) as Kirkman’s new Chief of Staff, Mars Harper, who has a clear plan for the Presidency, and Lauren Holly (NCIS) as Mars’ wife Lynn, who’s struggling with her drug addiction.

Meanwhile, the existing cast has changed slightly as well. Hannah has left the FBI and now works for the CIA, while Adan Canto, Italia Ricci and Kal Penn are back as Aaron Shore, Emily Rhodes and Seth Wright respectively—but some of their characters will be setting off in new directions.

This is a show with a ton of untapped potential, due to the fact it had a lot of showrunner changes in the first two seasons. But having Designated Survivor on Netflix has given it a second life, plus a chance to push the envelope (it’s now rated TV-MA after being TV-14 while on ABC).
